Listening to...

Franz Ferdinand, Do You Want To?. The original version of this song is a carnival ride that careens (too) wildly between being too smart ass clever ("Well I woke up tonight I said Iiiiiiiii'm gonna make somebody love me) and being perfect ironic pop (the "doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo" refrain and the big disco beat) and ends up sounding like a particularly ambitious INXS track. Gotta love that line, "Well here we are at the transmission party," though.

The "Max Tundra Remix" gets all electro and even throws in a distant cousin of the synth line from Van Halen's "Jump." But the "Erol's Glam Racket Mix" pushes all that nonsense aside and just mashes together the two truly great moments from the single -- the big crunchin' 2 bar bit right before the last verse, and the big stompin' single bar bit right after the last chorus. The result sounds like Sweet trying to write an early version of "Ballroom Blitz" but not quite figuring out the chord change, or maybe the lost power pop gem that would've turned the Knack into two-hit wonders. And then, because those two bits together lead to an obvious dead end, the whole thing suddenly turns into a close approximation of the Chemical Brothers remixing a mediocre New Order track. This is real good cheese.
