Video Vault: The Psychedelic Furs, Love My Way

This is the moment when one strain of post-punk splintered off into New Wave. Oddly enough, it was the geeky hippie recluse Todd Rundgren who produced this song and album, as well as a number of other successful early 1980s synth-pop tunes.

This song was a semi-hit and a staple of early MTV. I remember my head-bangin' metal-lovin' brother stomping through our living room, pausing to take in a few seconds of this video, then sneering, "Where's their drummer?" I'm not sure whether he was being ironic or not.

Wow, looking at this now, 25 years later, it's hard to understand why David Bowie didn't loudly and vigorously complain that Richard Butler was ripping him off. Maybe because the rest of the band looks a little bit like the Velvet Underground, and Bowie had a long-standing obsession with the VU. Or maybe because this song was better than anything Bowie was doing circa 1982, and it didn't hurt him to have people think this might've been him.
